First question I got is What are some of the best Nutrisystem diet plans? Thanks for any answer or 2. Another quick question... Didn't want to further contribute to you hooligans that have hijacked Larry's thread..

What martial arts would yous recommend for someone like me: 5'9", stocky build, low center of gravity, above average leg strength, below average upper body strength, prefers grappling? I'm looking for a physical discipline and not for competition or personal protection (that's what my sling shot is for)...

Yeah, some form of Judo would probably be the best bet, and easiest to find. Sambo looks interesting, but I've never seen a training center for it. Granted, I've never looked real hard.....

I agree. Judo is probably your best, most accessible bet..

Though, Sambo sure does look interesting. Watch some of Fedor Emelianenko's MMA bouts and you'll see what we mean...

Try jello wrestling at the local tavern on Saturday night. Be careful though, some of them women can be vicious...

In addition to being the most accessible, Judo is also usually the least expensive, and strangely enough, usually has the most qualified instructors ready and eager to teach. It is an Olympic sport as well as martial art (as is Kukkiwon style Taekwondo), so many college towns have Judo clubs/schools..

Since you don't want/need the martial art for self defence (hint: JohnnyU needs to read closer), a gun would be handy to have, though not necessary since you already have your sling shot..

Just be careful though, you might shoot your eye out!..

My BLACKBELT holds a Glock g21 (45ACP) with 13+1 and two additional 13 mags. This I have found is the best black belt around!..

My dad told me once when I was still very young, I think about the same time I finished toilet training, that a gun is just like a condom. I'd rather have one and not need it, than need one and not have it!..

I like my G22, more ammo than the 21 and a .40 isn't anything to scoff at. Getting too expensive to go to the range though...

I feel your pain Faloi....Our local range here makes you buy THERE ammo to shoot there... I wanted to take my ak47 in, but their price for 7.62 ammo was insane.... Damn this Iraqi war, driving the price up!!!!!!.

Hey Jim, can you recommend a good pistol? I have my permit to own in NC, but not to carry. I basically want something for target practice, but still has enough firepower to blow a really big hole in an unexpecting intruder....50 Desert Eagle a little too much?..

Whith those white unirforms do you were a cup? Do you freeball it? Just wondering if it was like a kilt, where you need to let the guys hang free to wear it...

I do TKD. A cup is recommended. However, when just starting out at White Belt you probably won't be doing anything physical with someone else. I will tell you from first hand experience that getting kicked in the cup is still not a fun experience but it is better than getting kicked in the nads. Cups can slide around and pinch which also hurts like a *****...

I've seen poor control + "non-contact" sparring go bad. I'd recommend wearing a cup regardless. Make sure it's a wrap-under style cup, too. There's some protection that goes over the uniform too, those are handier than wearing a cup the full lesson time but I don't know personally if they're equally effective. I've worn 'em, but been spared any real contact in the region...

Okay, first of all, the over the uniform cups are.

GHEY.

..

Do not get one of those unless you enjoy getting raped. You'll be labeled a puss forever, and your bruised ego would hurt a lot more than any external bruise ever could. Plus, they seem to slip a lot and if you get kicked the right way, the cup would simply be kicked to the side and you'll still get sack-attacked. So in my opinion, ghey AND unsafe is NOT a good combo..

Secondly, the better, more organized martial arts affiliations have specific requirements as to what type of regulated safety gear to use. Just for the record, most of those use the regular, under the clothes cups..

If you will be doing a striking art: Taekwondo, Karate, Kung Fu, etc, then a cup is a MUST unless you're a castrato, in which case, who cares. But, you will eventually get your nether-region kicked HARD either by accident, or on purpose by some jack hole who thinks he's kewl..

If you are doing a strictly grappling art, then cups aren't recommended because "the boys" will get crushed by a cup. I know it sounds contradictory, but trust me, it's true. Cup + Grappling = Crushed Nutz..

If you do a combo art that includes striking and grappling, then you're choices are don't wear a cup and get really Jedi with your blocking skills, or wear a cup and hope you don't flatten your nards..

But you (The O.P.) said you were more interested in the grappling arts, so there ya go...

Bro, I do appreciate the input. Thankfully, I have a fully retractable package, which is why I am undefeated in the octagon..

Seriously, judo sounds like a good suggestion as well as sambo. My main interest is in discipline as well as physical fitness...

I practice Youn Wha Ryu (mix between TKD, JJ, and Akido). A cup is required, and the first time I got too cool for a cup I was jump back-kicked three times in the nads in one sparring session. Evidently my instructor saying "kicks up" wasn't enough for some. Needless to say, after that my padiwan blocking has been improved by conditioned response. Also, I don't forget that cup any more...

Michael,.

Do you want full contact? Its not for everyone.

Do you want "real" life defense?.

Do you want to learn all of the varied disciplines IE: Karate, tai-kwan-do, judo?.

Do you want to get strong?.

Well there is only one form of martial arts that will get you there....

Israeli Krav-Maga.

Translated it means "contact combat self defense". Anything else is secondary IMHO..

Nothing else compares to it's scientific approach and it's realistic life lesson tactics. I mean nothing... This type of martial art isn't for everyone. So beware..

Here take a look at the following videos for a small snapshot of what it's all about..

This stuff WILL save your life....

Krav Maga - The Original Israeli Self Defense System.

Krav Maga (pronounced (krv) (mg)) is Hebrew for "contact combat." It is the official self-defense system of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), and is used by members of the New York Police Department (NYPD), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the US Secret Service, and the US Armed Forces, as well as many other elite combat, defense, and law enforcement units around the world..

Developed in the tough battlegrounds of the Middle-East, Krav Maga has been effectively adapted for law enforcement and civilian use. It is the ideal self-defense system for use on the street - a place where no rules exist..

Krav Maga is a self-defense system that anyone can use, regardless of size, strength, or fitness. Krav Maga emphasizes simple and practical techniques, real life scenarios, and intense training..

The Krav Maga Federation schools are dedicated to providing the highest level of Krav Maga training in the world...
